Today, Vertigo released a box set with all ten volumes of Neil Gaiman’s epic, The Sandman. Each of the ten volumes have been completely recolored and placed in a slipcase with special art by original Sandman cover artist Dave McKean. Gaiman’s legendary series was recently named the best comic run of all time by Comic Book Resources saying:
Not only did he come up with clever story ideas, what was remarkable about Gaiman was that his stories also were extremely character-driven. Gaiman would introduce new characters constantly, and within an issue, you felt like you knew the character your whole life.
On top of Gaiman’s fantastic writing, the series was accompanied by a slew of great artists. Dave McKean painted all of the covers, while the interiors were completed by a variety of artists including Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, Malcom Jones III, and many others. Despite having so many artists on board, the series always had the same fantasy feel to it.
The series ran for a total of seventy-five issues from 1988 to 1996 along with several spin-offs along the way. Throughout its run, Sandman and its spin-offs received twenty-six Eisner awards (the comic equivalent to an Oscar). Gaiman also recently announced a Sandman prequel series coming in the fall of 2013.
The box set retails for $199.99, but Christmas is right around the corner. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly suggest doing so.
